Resist occurs when one media prevents another media creating a contrast in a design; i.e. oil and water

Creative & Critical Behavior Students Will Enhance:
Students will make decisions for their line drawing.
Students will work with white oil pastel on white paper. They will carefully draw with thick lines to ensure their shapes will show.
Students will choose what colors to paint over their design to enhance their picture and show the white pattern underneath.
Aesthetics, Art Criticism, Art History:
Batik is an ancient art that can be traced back to Indonesia, India, and China. Artists create batik fabrics that are unique to the materials, symbols and ideas of their own culture.

Art Making Steps:
Students will sketch out ideas of simple shapes from nature (flowers, bird, trees) or simple shapes that can be repeated.
Students will draw shapes using white oil pastel on white paper.
Students will paint over paper with acrylic or watercolor paint.
Students will discover how the oil from the pastel resists the water-base paint.
Aesthetic Steps/Questioning:
Can something copied be considered art? Does art have to be about something or can it just look nice on its own? What conditions must be met for something with a function to be considered a work of art?
